Fast Company South Africa, October 2014 (LAUNCH ISSUE + PARTY)

Fast Company 10 October 2014

Fast Company South Africa is here, and I’m excited about it (and so should you be)!

In June 2014, I was able to announce that Fast Company will be coming to our shores with a South African edition, and this month it launched, with much excitement (see below about their launch).

If you’re worried that Fast Company SA is just a cookie-cutter magazine from the USA with only International content, you’ll be happy to hear that that’s not the case at all! Amongst the International features, the South African feature stories in this issue (which are really well presented and written, and really interesting) are:

  • “A recipe for success – With its massive and growing product offering, quality assurance and free delivery policy, Yuppiechef is changing the face of e-commerce in South Africa”. Interiew with Yuppiechef co-founder Andrew Smith.
  • “Everyone on the same page – Wyzetalk makes it possible for companies to communicate, collaborate and innovate” Interview with Wyzetalk CEO and co-founder Gysbert ‘Gys’ Kappers.
  • “Redesigning the soul of a city”. Article about the World Design Capital 2014.
  • “A world made more open – Mark Shuttleworth is inspriring – globally – the same radical, innovative collaboration that launched his career”. Interview with Mark Shuttleworth.
  • “On to the next one – After successfully launching and selling a majority stage in her first business, Rapelang Rabana’s instincts have led to her next project”. Interview with Rapelang Rabana, founder and CEO of Rekindle Learning.

The quick facts:

The Summary:

If you’re at all an entrepreneur, a business man/woman, or even just a manager at a company, I really think you’ll find the articles and the learning, very interesting and helpful. The layout is very fresh and ‘international’, and the way the articles are packaged, it really feels like you’re taking in a lot of information and facts.

The magazine ‘feels’ quite thin, but at 78 editorial pages (100 total pages – 22 ad pages), I can guarantee you that it’s a hefty read and that you’ll walk away thinking that it’s quite good value for R35. The reason why it might come across as being ‘too thin’, is purely because of the paper stock that is being used, which is on par with the International version.

The Launch:

I attended the launch last week, Thursday 16 October, at East City Studios in Cape Town. Even though the catered food was quite disappointing and bland, the bar made up for it, and also the nice vibe from everyone that attended.

Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille, also attended the launch and gave a great and supportive speach.

And as part of the gifts for guests, there was a Tombola-table with a wide variety of quality prizes ranging from handmade leather iPad cases, to jewelery, to art works, and it also included pair of Ballo wooden sunglasses (valued at R1 299), which I was lucky enough to win!

For more pictures of the launch, you can view their Facebook album here.

I’m personally looking forward to many more issues, and wish the team all the best with this exciting venture!
